Saving Carrots

A year in the making.....The Carrot umbels have finally bloomed.
I am always surprised at how tall a Carrot can get during the seed saving process.
Carrots are biennial's, which means that it will take two growing seasons to complete the life cycle.

The first year is for vegetative growth, the second year is for maturity and seed production.

With just a little more time...these will be pollinated, left to dry on the stalk and then finally ready for harvest.

Feed Sack Wallpaper

I have always saved the feed sacks from our chicken feed. We've just stacked and stowed them away for another day.

Today...was one of those days!

After cleaning the coop and integrating the little chicks with the elders, we decided to get to work and use up all those bags we had lying around. The coop has been wallpapered in patchwork style.

We stapled the bags between the studs and we were able to cover up that ugly particle board siding. I love how it turned out....Who knew old feed sacks could add so much color and fun.

New addition to the garden

Eric The Red Siberian Iris

With a beautiful shade of purple, these dainty little Siberian Iris are a great new addition to my flower bed. These do have a noticeable shade difference from the other Iris we are currently growing, shown in the photo below.

Today's Harvest

With all the rain, the Kale and lettuce are on like gangbusters....

Today's Kale harvest weighed in at nearly a pound.

Lemon Slice Superbells

I really wanted some of these darling little Lemon Slice Superbells last year, but never could locate any during the growing season.

I was delighted to find them at Walmart and knew I just had to have a couple of these sunny little gems.

Interplanting

I took advantage of the small spaces between the garlic to interplant  lettuce. The lettuce grew amazingly fast and I do believe the garlic shaded the lettuce enough to keep it lasting longer in the garden. It will take until July when we harvest the garlic to see what effects the lettuce may have had on garlic size. Interplanting really cut back on weeding and overall, I am impressed with the results.

Popping up Parsnips

The parsnips took their sweet time sprouting....Making it more difficult to tell what was a weed or an actual baby sprout..They have finally popped up and have their heads held high and mighty. Weeding just got a lot easier.
